Once discovered, Sidecar Donuts in Santa Monica quickly became a favorite weekend stop for my husband and me. Sidecar serves our (current) favorite donuts. And, given it opens at 6:30 a.m., it is also one of the few locations we can go when we wake up particularly early on a weekend.
If an eatery offers something chocolate, that will likely be my favorite thing. Such is the case here, where the choc a lot donut ($3.25) is everything a chocolate donut should be (but usually isn’t). Callebaut chocolate glaze and cocoa nibs top this donut—chocolate on chocolate on chocolate. Not overly sweet, this donut makes an excellent delivery vehicle for some morning chocolate.
The star of the show, however, is quite possibly another donut. This donut does not stand out in the display—it looks plain on the outside and thus failed to catch my eye the first few times we visited Sidecar—but give it a chance. The magic of the country ham and egg donut ($5.75) lies within. Described as “a savory treat… raised and filled with poached egg, Benton’s ham, and a house made basil hollandaise sauce,” this donut is plain good. It is my husband’s favorite and perhaps mine too—next to the choc a lot. Note, however, that Sidecar only serves this donut until 11:30 a.m.
Other daily flavors include huckleberry $3.50; butter & salt $2.75; Saigon cinnamon crumb $2.75; maple bacon $3.75; Madagascar vanilla twist $3.00; and buttermilk drops $1.25 / 3 FOR $3.00.
